Our Build Process — Step 3
Specifications & Interior Selections
This is the third part of the Build Process here at Harlan Homes, where you will have the opportunity to decide on the specifications and interior design selections for your entire home! From light fixtures to flooring, this is the stage where you’ll be able to choose all the little details you want for your home, from top to bottom.
What To Expect At The Specifications & Interior Selections Stage
Much like the Design stage, this is a collaborative process that will involve design decisions on a much deeper level. As always, our team will be there to guide you through every step, helping you compare the different options and figuring out which ones will work best for your dream home.
Your new home’s interior design as well as external appearance will drive the selections process. There’s a wide range of options for materials, finishes, colours, and functionality to consider for every single facet of your home design, so you’ll be making a whole heap of decisions before this stage is over!
Things To Consider During The Specifications & Interior Selections Process
There are a variety of decisions you’ll need to make across every area of your home. No detail will be left untouched.
Here are just a few examples of the interior finishes you need to consider at this stage. Your actual checklist will differ, but this will give you a guide so you can come prepared:
- Interior wall finishes
- Interior flooring, including carpets
- Interior colour schemes, including paint colour selections
- Wallpaper or feature wall detailing, like wainscoting
- Toilets, taps, and other bathroom fittings
- Light fittings
- Kitchen appliances
- Benches and vanities
- Joinery design
- Cornices, skirting, and architraves
- Internal doors and even door handles
You will also need to choose your exterior finishes, including:
- Windows and doors
- Bricks and/or cladding
- Roof coverings
- External surfaces including driveways and paths
- External living spaces including decks, pergolas, and al-fresco areas
How To Prepare For Your Selections Appointment
We understand how overwhelming the selections process can be, which is why our team has developed a streamlined process that ensures an enjoyable and stress-free experience for all our clients.
Here are a few things that you can do to make the process even easier:
- Do your research – Look for online reviews and magazine articles that showcase the latest appliances, materials, and finishes so you can stay up to date on what’s available on the market right now.
- Prepare a moodboard – This can be a digital or a more traditional mood board that captures the types of materials, finishes, and design scheme you’d like in your home.
- Share some samples – If you’ve got product samples, bring them over! We’ll do our best to source them or find a similar product within our own collection of samples.
- Talk to other people – Specifically, have a chat with friends and family who have recently built their own homes. They’re a treasure trove of information!
- Create a list of must-haves – If there are things you absolutely must have in your new home, put them on the list.
