What To Expect At Your Initial Consultation

When it comes to building a house, the initial consultation can really set the tone for the entire project. It’s an opportunity for us to meet and collaborate as a team, brainstorming ideas together and formulating a vision that will help guide the project and turn your dream home into a reality.

Beyond that, it is one of the most important stages of our signature Build Process simply because we view it as a chance to get to know you as a person. We can start to form a positive working relationship, allowing us to work seamlessly and collaboratively throughout your build.

Here’s what you’ll experience at this stage of the Harlan Homes Build Process:

A chance to meet the Harlan Homes team and your project manager, who will act as your primary point of contact throughout the process.
Dedicated time to discuss your family’s specific requirements and understand how your home can support your needs.
Opportunities to collaboratively workshop ideas, inclusions, design intent, and preliminary budget.

Share Your Vision

There are many things to consider when building a house, from small details like carpets and doors to larger decisions like the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you require.

You’re the only one who knows exactly what you need from your home, which is why your vision is the driving force behind your custom home build.

We want to know what a dream home looks like to you. Don’t just ask yourself what to consider in building a house, but think deeply about what to consider in building your ideal home.

At our first consultation, feel free to bring a checklist or even a moodboard of the things you’d like in your dream home. There are a lot of cool things to include when building a house – that’s the best part about custom home builds!

How To Prepare For Your First Meeting

Start doing some research – Whether it’s home layouts, types of materials, or overall design schemes, begin exploring what your ideal home will look like.
Bring visual aids – Photos, Pinterest boards, or even actual mood boards will give us a clear idea of what you’re looking for.
Have a look at floorplans – The Internet is a great resource for finding floorplans, but you can also request to look at some of our own floor plans for inspiration.
Think about your lifestyle – Perhaps you work from home and require a home office, or you have children who might need rooms that can grow with them. Observe your lifestyle and think of how your home can help support it.
Consider your current dwelling – What are the things that work (and don’t work) for you in the home you currently live in?
Your ideal budget and time frame – It’s important for us to be on the same page on these things.
Any questions you might have about the build – There is no such thing as a stupid question! We pride ourselves on being open and transparent, so ask us anything.

As a company, we decided early on that we wanted to spark genuine connections with our clients, getting to know them and providing them with outcomes that honour the relationship and rapport that we have built together (so to speak).

What Comes Next?

Once your consultation is complete, the team will get together to develop a realistic budget and design proposal. After that, we can move forward with the next step in our Build Process (which is arguably the most fun stage of the home building experience!).
